Samantha Lockwood – A Creative Renaissance Woman Tapping into a Variety of Disciplines, and Doing Them All Superbly!

It was a beautiful display of fine art and jewelry on October 20, 2011, at EM & CO boutique in Los Angeles.  The fashion installation/art exhibit perfectly complemented actress/jewelry designer/artist Samantha Lockwood, who also shared her spotlight with artist and mentor Muramasa Kudo.  Both art and jewelry were well received that evening.

Samantha Lockwood grew up in Los Angeles and La Quinta, CA. As a child she was exposed to art from her parents actor Gary Lockwood (2001: A Space Odyssey) and actress/entrepreneur Denise DuBarry.  Lockwood attended UC Santa Cruz and studied Fine Art, Buddhist Art History, Theater Acting, and Marine Biology. Her work is influenced by her love of Buddhist art, the ocean, water, and nature.  Lockwood has been exhibited in the US, but her art is loved all over the world.  She paints from her home studio in Los Angeles, or wherever she might be in the world when she is inspired.

Aside from her theater studies while in college, Samantha started her acting career at age 16, when she studied a variety of disciplines (dialect, improv, commercial) with Robert Eastmam, Carolyn Barry, Lesly Kahn, and Joseph Pearlman.   By age 20, Lockwood had already appeared in countless infomercials, commercials, and had been a professional model.  She has appeared in CSI: New York, was featured more than once in Maxim, and was “the up-and-coming starlet to watch” in Esquire Magazine.  She currently stars in the Showtime movie Shoot the Hero.

With so much going for her in her acting and fine artist career (oh yeah, she also teaches Bikram Yoga), it’s hard to imagine Samantha having time for anything else.  But this focused Renaissance woman is carving her own niche as a jewelry designer with a very unique concept.  Her line is called Fleurings.

“My Grandmother Betty King always wore a flower in her hair.  She taught me how to cultivate, properly cut flowers, and wear flowers in my hair in order.  Her advice to “wear a flower” has always paid off in compliments and creates a conversation piece. Even as a young actress just starting out, I waited tables for a stint and found that wearing flowers brought in better tips!”

I remember when I first learned of the line, I thought it was ingenius; to be able to wear a flower as part of jewelry was a novel idea.  Uniquely, Fleurings offers a variety of looks based on ones own choice of flowers.  And depending on the flower that look can easily change.  Fleurings comes as earrings, necklaces, and lapel pins.  So, both men and women can enjoy it.

Hydrogen Magazine’s ‘Face to Watch’ actress Samantha Lockwood

February 16, 2012

Actress, Jewelry Designer, Bikram Yoga Instructor. Artist. And that’s the sort list where Los Angeles native Samantha Lockwood is concerned. This free spirited beauty is our Face to Watch from roles in Showtime’s “Shoot the Hero!”, to the upcoming projects “Monkey Jar” and “The Other Country” there is nothing stopping this brown eyed girl.

BEST THING ABOUT A MONKEY JAR: “Monkey Jar” is an action film. I have a co-starring role as Moira McCord and the story is about a Northern Irish cop from Scotland Yard on loan to the American DEA to hunt down a young woman wanted for questioning in the murder of a London cop. The project is written and will be directed by Stephen Savage. The BEST part of this role is that I will finally get to show off more of my action skills and stretch my limits by playing a character with an accent. With my Bikram Yoga training background, I do have some athletic skills that I feel should be shown and utilized in a film. I look forward to doing many more action films in the future.

BEST YOGA POSE: Bikram Choudhury, who founded Bikram Yoga , is my teacher. He taught yoga to my parents who were both actors as well. My mom went on to open two different Bikram Schools in her lifetime so I have been raised around it my whole life. Bikram nicknamed me “Yoga Baby” because I’ve been in and out of the yoga room since I was in the womb – no joke – my mother practiced Bikram Yoga all the way through her pregnancy.

I love all kinds of yoga. Ultimately it helps me focus on my purpose: To uplift, inspire, respect, encourage, serve others and be happy. My favorite pose is the Standing Bow because I think it’s the prettiest. It’s also called the Dancer’s Pose.

BEST OF FLEURINGS: Fleurings is my jewelry line which directly comes from my first creation of set of earrings designed to hold water and a flower. Hence “Fleur” (French interpretation because it’s sexy) and “Earrings ,” combined is “Fleurings. ” The line has expanded to include not only earrings, but necklaces and lapel pins as well, with many more designs on the way. I created Fleurings to make wearing flowers easy and longer lasting. Each of my designs is made to hold a little bit of water and fresh flowers. They are ideal to wear with orchids, daisies, mums and small roses. The intention with Fleurings is to offer a new way to celebrate an old tradition of wearing flowers.  It’s advice that was passed down through my family from my Grandmother.

The BEST part about Fleurings is that you can change the flower to match your outfit. I even have customers who wear my designs without any flowers just because they look mysterious and sleek and then they add flowers as they like. It’s a versatile line.

 BEST POSSESSION: Life.

BEST MOMENT YOU’D RELIVE IF YOU COULD: It was a beautiful moment to see my father feel overwhelmed when Tom Hanks mentioned and honored him during a speech he gave at The Academy. He introduced a film my dad was in called “2001: A Space Odyssey”. It was nice to see my tough dad in rare form, he was truly touched and I loved seeing him feel so proud.

BEST TRIUMPH:  Waking up every morning with a smile and a purpose.

Building a reputation as a strong actress, many people have seen Samantha in “Shoot the Hero!” on SHOWTIME or OnDemand.  She plays the leading lady ‘Kate’ opposite Jason Mewes who plays ‘Nate’ her fiance in the film. The cast also includes the talented and seasoned actors Taylor Negron, Danny Trejo, Nick Turturo, Fred Williamson and upcomers Mike Hatton and Nic Nac Nictotera. Her reviews speak for themselves….

“It’s rare to see a young actress with such élan. Samantha is natural, charming and engaging to watch” – iconic actress, Gena Rowlands.

“I have to say, Ms. Lockwood is just terrific. This could’ve easily been the “Bitch” role and she could have taken the easy route. But no, she is able to giver her Kate a sense of honesty and charm. Just an absolutely lovely performance” – JimmyO ‘JoBlo.com’ (read the full review here )

“But my favorite is Samantha Lockwood, she plays Mewes’ fiancee, Kate. After watching the film, I asked Sesma who’s that girl in the movie — she’s charming and memorable, and has great timing!” – Manny The Movie Guy ( read the full review here )

“Pretty Samantha Lockwood should be singled out for making her difficult lines sound easy. And she always had a look in her eyes that gave the impression she was really present in the moment of whatever scene she was in. Believe me, this was no small task as the film is complex and engaging. Samantha kind of reminds me of a young Jennifer Anniston. She has the easy, natural grace that is endearing.” – Eonn Skye of Desert Star Weekly after the premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
